Election Time Troubles In a Small Town
School board elections are coming up in Blevins, AR, but that fact alone isn't the largest cause for serious debate. What brings up concern, however, is whether or not current school board member, Ted Bonner, will step up and run again for elections.Over two years ago, Bonner was at a party (supposedly in his own home) when these pictures were taken of him. These photos quickly went viral, with not only the students knowing about it but news organizations and even the Arkansas NAACP became aware of the matter. An elected official from the Blevins School District is now under scrutiny after pictures surfaced of him wearing blackface. pic.twitter.com/qe15xECdBl— Sarafina Brooks (@SarafinaBrooks) November 15, 2016
Members of the Arkansas NAACP called for Bonner to resign, and yet he refused. Threats were issued via phone to staff members of the high school, many of whom have nothing to do with the Bonner issue, yet it cannot be confirmed whether this was members of the public or those of the NAACP.
What is known is that the school could not legally remove Bonner from his position. As of right now, the only way to remove him from office would be for the community to vote for another representative for the school board to take his place.
Bonner is known throughout the small town, most specifically for the Hillarosa Mud Bog.
This attraction brings hundreds of people out to the small town of 305 residents. With the many people who know Bonner, there are fans of him that support him to not leave the school board and have taken to Facebook to show their stance.
There is not much else the community can do other than to vote when the time comes. Until then, let's just hope that the rest of the school's staff will not produce anything as obscene as Bonner did.
