What is News?
This satirical post truly emphasizes what is constantly covered by news programs across the globe. When a happy moment happens, it is not nearly as newsworthy as the real world horror stories that plague us. Truly terrible actions are what gain viewership.
"we pay attention to bad news, because on the whole, we think the world is rosier than it actually is."
The BBC says it best: happy moments should be normal. In the minds of most people, we come to believe society to be better than it actually is. When happy news is heard on the airways, it is generally ignored. Once we catch wind of a horrible event, it is all over social media and featured on the major news networks.
The urban dictionary definition also resonates with our younger generation, those who were raised through 9/11 and the start of the War on Terror. We were the children who were in school when school shootings sprang out across the United States. We were the ones who were told to fear everything. My dad has told me his curfew to get home used to be when the street lights came on - when he was in second grade. It wouldn't be until I was a freshman in high school that my parents' fears were only slightly alleviated because of my age. They feared what could have happened to me because that was all they knew from the news.
This all leaves us with one final thought: Has the world really become this bad or have the major news sites become little more than fear mongering propaganda.
